The Best Military Communities on O’ahu
Check out some of our O’ahu military favorites!
Best Quiet Neighborhood with Short Commutes: Aiea Heights
Centrally located Aiea Heights is a popular choice for its proximity to just about everything. About an equal 10-15 minutes from Pearl Harbor-Hickam Joint Base, Fort Shafter, and Camp Smith, 20 minutes from Wheeler Army Airfield and Schofield Barracks, and 25 minutes from the US Coast Guard Base, Aiea Heights is scenic suburban living with an easy commute. Plus, it’s just a few minutes from the shopping/dining/entertainment mecca of Pearlridge Center and only about 20 minutes from Downtown Honolulu.
Best Beachside Community with Amenities: Ewa Beach
Much-loved for its affordable pricetags and proximity to the beach, Ewa Beach is a thriving and fast-growing community filled with possibility. Thriving shopping and commercial centers, beautiful golf courses, and plenty of parks and recreational areas make life great in Ewa. The commute is a little bit longer than from some of the more central neighborhoods—about 40 minutes to Pearl Harbor-Hickam and 50 minutes to Downtown, but the relaxed lifestyle is more than worth the few extra minutes on the H1.
Best Downtown Honolulu Neighborhood: Ala Moana
The opposite of Ewa Beach, Ala Moana is the thriving heart of action, excitement, and fast-paced Downtown living. Surrounded by bustling shopping, dining, and entertainment, like Ala Moana Center, Ala Moana is a highly walkable community popular with buyers who really want to live in the heart of all the action. Price tags can be a little higher, but the commute is pretty manageable: about 20 minutes to Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Camp Smith, and the US Coast Guard Base, and only about 15 minutes to Tripler Army Medical Center and Fort Shafter.
Best Walkable Community with Short Commutes: Pearlridge
Centrally located like Aiea Heights but a little more in the thick of things, like Ala Moana, Pearlridge is an ideal community for those who want to be close to bases, but still enjoy a fun and walkable lifestyle within easy reach of amenities like the Pearlridge Center of Aloha Stadium. It’s conveniently just 15 minutes to Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Camp Smith, Fort Shafter, and Tripler Army Medical Center, and only about 20 minutes from the US Coast Guard Base.
Best Overall Commute Times: Salt Lake
If you really want to be close to the bases, then Salt Lake just might be the place. Located just outside of Pearl Harbor-Hickam Joint Base and adjacent to the Honolulu International Airport, Salt Lake is an easy 5-10 minutes to just about all the bases—Camp Smith, Fort Shafter, Tripler Army Medical Field—and about 15 minutes from the US Coast Guard Base. Plus, you’ve got amenities like Salt Lake Shopping Center, Keehi Lagoon Beach Park, and Moanalua gardens, and just a 15 minute trip to Downtown.
