It can be all too easy to get sucked into visiting all the big tourist destinations—Waikiki Beach and Ala Moana, Diamond Head and other overcrowded hikes, the big memorials and historical attractions. Not that these aren’t well-worth the stop, but if you’re looking for something a little more off-the-beaten-path, then these three spots definitely shouldn’t be overlooked.
Instead of competing with throngs of rowdy tourists for beach real estate at Waikiki, head to the more secluded Hunakai. Pristine white-sand shores and turquoise waters await unobstructed, hidden from tourists behind breathtaking mansions tucked into private jungle along the coastline.
Kuli’ou’ou Ridge Trail
Diamond Head offers some amazing views, but it’s often overcrowded with tourists, who can dampen your experience with noise and photo obstructions. Skip the crowds and escape to the pristine wilderness of the southern tip of O’ahu. This 5-mile round trip hike winds through a variety of flora and offers breathtaking east-side views from the top.
While the Lanikai Pillboxes might not quite rank among the most famous destinations on the island, it is definitely one of its most popular hikes. Lesser known is the similar yet more private Ehukai Pillboxes hike, located on the Northshore of the island. With plenty of trails to the top, it’s a great option for avid hikers, and yields truly spectacular views of the island.
